GEOCHEMICAL ATLASES

Polish Geological Institute conducts investigations in the field of natural environment protection using methods of geochemical cartography. These investigations enable to evaluate the pollution of the Earth's surface in the fast, objective and relatively non-expensive way.

Investigations cover soils, water sediments and surface waters. Topographical maps in projections 1965 or 1942 in the scale 1: 50 000 are used for location of samples. Chemical analyses and elements determinations are performed in PGI Central Chemical Laboratory.

Field's data registered at the special sampling charts are introduced to the database. This data base is used for division of sub data sets, indispensable for statistical analyses according to different environmental criteria, for instance elements concentrations in: cultivating soils, soils at the forest areas, urban areas etc.

Results of sampling and chemical analyses are assembled and stored in database. These data constitute a base for preparation of geochemical or radiological maps, which are part of individual atlases.

The atlases contains explanatory notes which include: tables and descriptions of sampling and analytical methods, geological background, sources of environmental pollution, data bases, construction of geochemical maps and general results.

Geochemical atlases are made in different scales and could be divided according to specification into:

  1. Regional Atlases
  2. Agglomerations Atlases
  3. Detailed Maps
  4. Thematic Atlases
  5. Radioecological Atlases

Principles of accession:

Printed atlases, together with explanatory notes are available in the PGI Publication Distribution and Promotion Section:
