SUMMARY:Training School “Coastal zone management out of geological perspective”
LOCATION:Polish Geological Institute – National Research Institute Marine Geology Br
anch, Kościerska 5 st. 80-328, Gdańsk, Poland
DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:\n\nDescription\n\n\nChanges in the coastal zone are caused by various fact
ors, among which the main place should be attributed to the diversity of ge
ological conditions, both inland and offshore part of the coast and their d
erivative — geomorphology and topography. These natural processes shaping t
he coasts are common in the case of epicontinental seas such as the Baltic
Sea. Especially the coastal zone of the southern Baltic, from Germany in th
e west to Latvia and even some parts of Estonia and Russia (Gulf of Finland
) in the east is ex-posed to intense erosional changes. Simultaneously, coa
stal areas have always been im-portant for economic and social reasons. The
y are subject to pressure from settlements and (still) are an important par
t of socio-economic development. Therefore, the study of natural processes
related to the geological conditions of the coast is becoming a growing cha
llenge in the development and management of the coastal zone.\n\n\nThis pro
posed training school will focus on three specific topics:\n\n - Discussion
of economic management and adaptation to the development of the coastal zo
ne due to the occurrence of geohazards\n - Methods of coastal protection of
different type of coast and its pros and cons out of geological perspectiv
e\n - Seabed resources management in the near shore areas\n\n\n\nApplicatio
 n Deadline\n\n\nSeptember, 06, 2019\n\n\n\n\nLecturers\n\n - Grzegorz Uścin
owicz, Polish Geological Institute – National Research Institute, Marine Ge
ology Branch, Poland\n - Daria Ryabchuk, A.P. Karpinsky Russian Research Ge
ological Institute (VSEGEI), Russia\n - Sytze van Heteren, Geological Surve
y of the Netherlands\n - Piotr Szmytkiewicz, Institute of Hydro-Engineering
of Polish Academy of Sciences, Poland\n - Grzegorz Różyński, Institute of
Hydro-Engineering of Polish Academy of Sciences, Poland\n\n\n\nPractical Ac
tivities\n\n\nLectures on coastal zone management out of geological perspec
tive.\n\n\nField trip: practical examples of geological conditions and rela
ted processes on the different type of coast (barrier and cliffs)\nGet-2-Ge
ther events.\n\n\n\n\nTravel Information\n\n\nGdańsk is well connected to n
umerous European cities.\n\n\nBy air\n\n\nInternational flights to many Eur
opean capitals and regional destinations are operated by regular and budget
airlines. Lech Wałęsa airport is in Rębiechowo, 14 km west of Gdańsk. You
can get to/from airport by city bus lines, local train and taxi.\n\n\nBy tr
ain\n\n\nThe main train station – Gdańsk Główny is located in the vicinity
of the Old Town. Gdańsk has the rail connections to all main cities of Pola
 nd: Warsaw (~ 3,5 h), Poznań, (~ 3 h), Kraków (~ 5,5 h), Szczecin (~ 6 h),
 Wrocław (~ 6 h), Toruń (~ 3h).\n\n\nBy car\n\n\nGdańsk is located at the cr
ossroads of important national and international roads – the A1 motorway, l
eading to the south, the national road No. 7, runs through Warsaw and Krako
w and the national road No. 6, leading to the western border in Kołbaskowo.
This facilitates access to the city from all parts of the country.\n\n\nBy
ferry\n\n\nFerry connection operates car ferries from Gdańsk Nowy Port to
Nynäshamn (Sweden) and from Gdynia (20 km north of Gdańsk) to Karlskrona (S
weden).\n\n\n\n\nPractical Information\n\n\nPoland is a member of the Europ
ean Union common border and customs area, the Schengen Zone, hence, the cit
izens of EU countries do not need visas to enter/exit Poland and may stay f
or an indefinite period. Non-European Union nationalities should check visa
requirements with the Polish embassy or consulate in their home country.\n
\n\n\n\nTrainees Eligible to Apply for Grants\n\n\nTrainees must be engaged
in an official research programme as a PhD Student or post-doctoral fellow
or can be employed by, or affiliated to, an institution, organisation or l
e-gal entity which has within its remit a clear association with performing
research. There is funding available for a number of trainees to attend th
is event – up to a maximum of 300 EURO for Poland attendees and 500 EURO fo
r attendees from other countries.\n\n - Trainees from COST Full Members / C
OST Cooperating Member.\n - Trainees from Approved NNC institutions.\n - Tr
ainees from Approved European RTD Organisations.\n\n\n\nIf you would like t
o attend, please contact the organiser (Grzegorz Uścinowicz: grzegorz.uscin
 owicz@pgi.gov.pl) by September 06, 2019 submitting a short CV, a paragraph
about why you want to attend underlining how it might benefit you (no more
 than 5-6 lines).\n\n\n\n\nLink: https://www.oceangov.eu/news_full/training-
