SUMMARY:11th International Cretaceous Symposium
LOCATION:University of Warsaw
DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:\n\n Dear Colleagues, \n\n\nWe stand in solidarity with our co-workers
, our colleagues, our friends, and the entire Ukrainian Nation in their her
oic defense of their country against Russian invasion. We earnestly hope fo
r peace, and that we will be able to celebrate their liberation soon.\n\n\n
It is our pleasure to announce that the registration and abstract submissio
n portals of the 11th International Cretaceous Symposium (11th ICS), to be
held in Warsaw, Poland from August 22 to 26 (with pre-conference field-trip
s, August 18-21, and post-conference field-trips, August 27-29), have opene
d.\n\n\nWe encourage you to proceed to the Symposium website to register, s
ubmit abstracts, select sessions, and sign up for field excursions.\n\n\nPl
ease look at the revised scientific session program. Note that the program
has not been finalized, and that new session proposals will be carefully co
nsidered: we welcome suggestions of additional sessions [and workshops] if
you find the topic worthy of coverage during the Symposium.\n\n\nAt the pre
sent time, we anticipate the Symposium will be a *mostly* in-person event.
However, an online live streaming service will be offered to those unable t
o travel to Warsaw, but willing to join us. We are also aware that, because
of the current geopolitical situation, some of the present plans may need
to be modified; if necessary, we will provide updates ina timely fashion.\n
\n\nThe final program of the Symposium will be published in early July.\n\n
\nWith kind regards,\n\n\nIreneusz Walaszczyk, Jacek Grabowski, Agata Jurko
wska, Piotr Krzywiec, Marcin Machalski, Zbigniew Remin, Jordan Todes, Alfre
d Uchman and Jurand Wojewoda \n\n\non behalf of the organizers\n\n\n\n\n&nb

E EXCURSION (3 DAYS)\n\nLate Cretaceous Geodynamics of the Sudetes area in
the sedimentary record The northern periphery of the Bohemian Massif, inclu
ding the Sudetes, is characterized by (1) local variation in the timing of
marine transgression in response to dramatic differences in the underlying
geological substrate and topography, (2) a large range of lithologic variat
ion within the Cretaceous sediments, and (3) a clear sedimentary record of
syndepositional geodynamic activity. During the Cretaceous, this area was d
ivided into several sub-basins with well-defined tectonic frames, often wit
h pull-apart structures driven by the regional strike-slip dextral geodynam
ic regime dominant throughout its post-Variscan history. The Cretaceous dep
osits in the Sudetes represent an excellent example of the interaction of g
lobal, regional, and local processes on sedimentation.\n\n\nLed by Jurand W
ojewoda, Alina Chrząstek and Stanisław Leszczyński.\n\n\nPRE-CONFERENCE EXC
URSION (3 DAYS)\n\nFrom shallow – to deep-marine Cretaceous of the northern
Tethys – record of diversification of the Alpine system in the Polish Carp
athians The field trip aims to explore the Cretaceous sediments of the West
ern Carpathians, deposited in variegated tectonic settings: from pelagic an
d carbonate platform in the uppermost Jurassic/ Lower Cretaceous to synorog
enic marls and clastics in the Upper Cretaceous. You will see the beautiful
landscapes of the southernmost tip of Poland with Alpine-type mountains, p
icturesque klippen and alps.\n\n\nLed by Krzysztof Bąk, Marta Bąk, Jacek Gr
abowski, Jan Hejnar, Jolanta Iwańczuk, Michał Krobicki, Damian Lodowski, Al
fred Uchman\n\n\nPRE-CONFERENCE EXCURSION (2 DAYS)\n\nTuronian-Coniacian of
the Opole Cretaceous. This field trip will lead participants to the enormo
us Folwark quarry in Opole, where almost the entire so-called “Opole Cretac
eous” is well-exposed. These strata – largely marls and chalks – are charac
terized by a rich, diverse paleontological and ichnological record: there a
re numerous representatives of ammonites, inoceramid and other bivalves, ec
hinoids, sponges and other invertebrate groups, to a lesser extent, vertebr
ates (fish, sharks, and reptiles). The biostratigraphical scheme relies on
calcareous nannoplankton, inoceramids, and ammonites.\n\n\nLed by Elena Yaz
ykova, Mariusz Kędzierski, Jordan Todes and Dawid Mazurek\n\n\nPRE-CONFEREN
CE EXCURSION (1 DAY)\n\nPalaeontological and geological collections in Wars
aw. You will have the opportunity to see the rich collections of the Geolog
ical Museum of the Polish Geological Survey, and the two museums of the Pol
ish Academy of Sciences: the Museum of Evolution and the Museum of the Eart
h, while touring the bustling center of Warsaw.\n\n\nLed by Izabela Ploch a
nd Tomasz Szczygielski\n\n\nPRE-CONFERENCE EXCURSION (2 DAYS)\n\nTracing bi
ogeochemical Si-cycle in Late Cretaceous marine environment. Geological rec
ord and petrology of the Upper Cretaceous of the Miechów Trough (southern P
oland) We would like to offer an exciting field trip across the Upper Creta
ceous succession of the Miechów Synclinorium. The trip starts and finishes
in Warsaw and includes an overnight stay in the European Center for Geologi
cal Education. https://www.eceg.uw.edu.pl/en/ The trip will focus on silice
ous-carbonate rocks and the biogeochemical Si cycle in marine environments.
\n\n\nLed by Agata Jurkowska, Ewa Świerczewska-Gładysz and Aleksandra Kaszt
elewicz\n\n\nPOST-CONFERENCE EXCURSION (2 DAYS)\n\nThe end of an Era: recor
d of environments, biotic communities and events across the Cretaceous-Pale
ogene boundary in Poland We shall be guiding you to the most important loca
lities in central and eastern Poland that record the environments, biotic c
ommunities and events just prior to and across the Cretaceous-Paleogene (K-
Pg) boundary. This trip will include the classic localities near Kazimierz
Dolny, in the Middle Vistula River section, as well as a section near Chełm
with the K-Pg iridium anomaly. We shall also pay a visit to a regional mus
eum at Kazimierz Dolny with a collection of late Cretaceous fossils.\n\n\nL
ed by Marcin Machalski, Danuta Olszewska-Nejbert and Ewa Świerczewska-Głady
sz\n\n\nPOST-CONFERENCE EXCURSION (2 DAYS)\n\nThe Cretaceous of the North S
udetic Synclinorium (southwestern Poland): stratigraphy, origin and economi
c importance. This trip will focus on the facies and sedimentary developmen
t of the Cenomanian‒Santonian shallow marine to terrestrial deposits of the
North Sudetic Synclinorium (some 400 km southwest of Warsaw), which record
a sedimentary basin (the North Sudetic Basin) that formed in the mid- Cret
aceous at the northern margin of the Bohemian Massif. The North Sudetic Bas
in constituted a southeastern extension of the East Brandenburg Basin and w
as, at least temporarily, connected by a (supposed) strait with the adjacen
t Intra-Sudetic Basin and – further to the south –the Bohemian Basin: accor
dingly, it linked the Tethyan and Boreal realms. Depositional processes, sy
stems, and environments, and the factors controlling sedimentation in this
basin, will be discussed. The economic importance of the deposits – as buil
ding stones, glass sandstones, and ceramic clays – will also be examined.\n
\n\nLed by Stanisław Leszczyński, Alina Chrząstek, Wojciech Nemec and
Jurand Wojewoda\n\n\nPOST-CONFERENCE EXCURSION (3 DAYS)\n\nCross border, cr
oss boundary: exploring the Jurassic-Cretaceous transition in the western C
arpathians. We are exploring the possibility of offering an exciting field
trip across the Western Carpathians, starting in Warsaw and ending in Budap
est, primarily for those delegates who wish to attend both the Cretaceous S
ymposium and the Jurassic Symposium [which will take place the week after t
he Cretaceous Symposium]. Organized jointly with Polish and Slovak colleagu
es, a special focus will be placed on the Jurassic-Cretaceous transition.\n
\n\nLed by Jacek Grabowski, Damian Lodowski, Kamil Fekete, Josef Micha
lik, Daniela Rehakova, Istvan Fozy, Ottilia Szives\n\n\nPOST-CONFERENCE EXC
URSION (2 DAYS)\n\nCretaceous deep-sea facies, stratigraphy, and ichnology
in the Flysch Carpathians and the Pieniny Klippen Belt. The excursion will
lead through selected outcrops of Cretaceous deposits in the western and mi
ddle part of the Polish Flysch Carpathians. Variable facies, problems of st
ratigraphy and ichnology of the most important lithostratigraphic units in
the Silesian, Subsilesian and Magura nappes will be presented.\n\n\nLed by
Alfred Uchman and collaborators\n\n\nPOST-CONFERENCE EXCURSION (3 DAYS)\n\n
Late Cretaceous inversion of the Polish Basin – facies distribution and bat
hymetrical changes The trip will focus on the northeastern part of the Mid-
Polish Anticlinorium. In several outcrops, we will examine the main facies
of this region (sandy limestone, gaize, opoka, marls, chalk), their spatial
relationship, and resultant bathymetric and environmental interpretations.
The surface data will be linked to high-resolution seismic images linking
the subsurface changes to the depositional architecture during the Late Cre
taceous inversion of the Polish Basin.\n\n\nLed by Zbigniew Remin, Piotr Kr
zywiec, and Aleksandra Stachowska\n\n\nVENUE THE UNIVERSITY OF WARSAW\n\nNe
w Library The new University of Warsaw Library is a building of surprising
diversity, fusing the functionality of a modern library with the atmosphere
of an old town. Abutting the Vistula embankment, it encapsulates European
culture while retaining adistinct Mazovian heritage. The interior of the bu
ilding is stunning, centered around a three-story monumental ‘Passage’ lead
ing to the library itself, and open spaces connecting reading halls, restin
g places, and the books themselves. Our lecture halls directly face rows of
bookshelves containing massive collections of books and magazines from aro
und the world. There are also numerous shops, cafes, and art galleries on t
he library premises. The roof of the library hosts one of the largest, most
beautiful rooftop gardens in Europe, and is an attractive resting place fo
r students and tourists alike. From the roof, visitors can admire both the
Varsovian skyline and the Vistula River. The garden is immersed in a profus
ion of vibrant plants: yellow, pink, red and orange flowering shrubs, silve
r-leaved willows, white blooming Dasiphora fruticosa, and dwarf pines, amon
g many others. The walkways, paths, bridges, and pergolas traversing the ga
rden are hidden within an assortment of vines and climbing hydrangea, provi
ding a scene of solitude and nature within the bustling University of Warsa
w campus. The majority of the symposium will be hosted here, in the new lib
rary. THE UNIVERSITY OF WARSAW Old Library This is an iconic building of th
e University of Warsaw: initially built in 1894, at the beginning of the 21
st century it was fully renovated into a modern lecture and conference cent

.\n\n\nECEG European Geological Education Center in Chęciny ECEG is the Uni
versity of Warsaw’s geologic field center, built within an abandoned Devoni
an dolomite quarry in the medieval town of Chęciny, in the heart of the Gòr
y Świętokrzyskie (the Holy Cross Mountains). With state-of-the-art geologic
al laboratories, lecture rooms, hotel accommodations, and all of the other
facilities that may be useful for comfortable field work, it is a perfect p
lace to carry out student field camps and geologic research. ECEG will serv
e as the base for some of our field trips, and host many of the pre- and po
st-conference workshops.\n\n\nCOMMITTEESScientific Committe\n - Beatriz Agu
