 s created a need for higher resolution imaging. Conventional imaging techni
 ques were no longer able to resolve pore networks down to the nanometer sca
 le. FIB/SEM, while originally developed for the semiconductor industry, now
  moves into O&amp;G applications because of its ability to create three-dim
 ensional datasets with nanometer scale resolution. Interestingly, FIB/SEM t
 echnology is also attraction attention from researchers in conventional res
 ervoirs; for instance to study microporous regions in carbonates.\n\n\n&nbs
 p;\n\n\nThis talk explains the technology of FIB/SEM and presents many appl
 ications both in conventional and unconventional reservoirs. Current challe
 nges are tackled such as the limited volumes imaged; anisotropy of the data
 set and throughput improvements. Emphasis is put on integrating this techno
 logy with other imaging techniques to come to a more complete understanding
  of reservoir characteristics.\n\n\n&nbsp;\n\n\nFIB/SEM combines the high r
 esolution 2D images of a scanning electron microscope (SEM) with the precis
 e cutting capability of a Focused Ion Beam (FIB). The FIB removes carefully
  controlled amounts of material to create 2D sections, parallel and aligned
 , with inter-section spacing of the order of 10nm. Each 2D section is image
 d with the SEM. In this way, after careful combination of the subsequent sl
 ices, a 3D model with SEM resolution in the XY direction and 10nm in the z-
 direction is obtained.\n\n\n&nbsp;\n\n\nAnother capability of the electron 
 beam is mineral classification. The electron beam induces X-rays that are c
 haracteristic of the phase irradiated by the beam. Comparing the energy dis
 persive X-ray (EDX) spectrum with a library of phases transforms the typica
 l grey-level SEM images into powerful mineral maps. Examples of mineral map
 s of the full core surface are used to judge heterogeneity of the sample an
 d this leads to a better insight where to perform 3D imaging by FIB/SEM.\n\
 n\n&nbsp;\n\n\nSPEAKER BIOGRAPHY\n\n\nAlan R. Butcher is a geologist with a
  specialization in rocks of commercial importance. He started off as an Ign
 eous Petrologist but his experience has grown to include Geochronology, App
 lied Mineralogy, Ore Deposit Geology, and Forensic Geoscience. Alan has als
 o worked on Moon rocks with NASA. He is best known for his work within the 
 field of Automated Mineralogy &amp; Petrography, particularly in the areas 
 of Process Mineralogy &amp; Reservoir Petrography. Specifically, Alan has m
 ore than 15 years experience with the QEMSCAN and MLA – the world's most ad
 vanced, fully automated mineral and petrographic analysis technologies. Rec
 ently, Alan has been involved in 2D-3D-4D mineralogy, which integrates elec
 tron beam and ion beam analysis (DualBeam) with micro-CT. In 2011, he was p
 art of a team that developed a mobile QEMSCAN that can work in remote locat
 ions such as well sites. He is a co-recipient of the 2011 American Associat
 ion of Petroleum Geologists' AI Levorsen Memorial Award, in recognition of 
 a paper on the diagenesis of the Marcellus Shale in north-eastern Pennsylva
 nia. He is a fellow of the Geological Society of London, holds a PhD in Geo
 logy, and is Principal Petrologist at FEI Natural Resources.\n\n\n&nbsp;\n\
