SUMMARY:11th International Cretaceous Symposium
LOCATION:University of Warsaw
DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:\n\n Dear Colleagues, \n\n\nWe stand in solidarity with our co-workers
, our colleagues, our friends, and the entire Ukrainian Nation in their her
oic defense of their country against Russian invasion. We earnestly hope fo
r peace, and that we will be able to celebrate their liberation soon.\n\n\n
It is our pleasure to announce that the registration and abstract submissio
n portals of the 11th International Cretaceous Symposium (11th ICS), to be
held in Warsaw, Poland from August 22 to 26 (with pre-conference field-trip
s, August 18-21, and post-conference field-trips, August 27-29), have opene
d.\n\n\nWe encourage you to proceed to the Symposium website to register, s
ubmit abstracts, select sessions, and sign up for field excursions.\n\n\nPl
ease look at the revised scientific session program. Note that the program
has not been finalized, and that new session proposals will be carefully co
nsidered: we welcome suggestions of additional sessions [and workshops] if
you find the topic worthy of coverage during the Symposium.\n\n\nAt the pre
sent time, we anticipate the Symposium will be a *mostly* in-person event.
However, an online live streaming service will be offered to those unable t
o travel to Warsaw, but willing to join us. We are also aware that, because
of the current geopolitical situation, some of the present plans may need
to be modified; if necessary, we will provide updates ina timely fashion.\n
\n\nThe final program of the Symposium will be published in early July.\n\n
\nWith kind regards,\n\n\nIreneusz Walaszczyk, Jacek Grabowski, Agata Jurko
wska, Piotr Krzywiec, Marcin Machalski, Zbigniew Remin, Jordan Todes, Alfre
d Uchman and Jurand Wojewoda \n\n\non behalf of the organizers\n\n\n\n\n&nb

Cretaceous Geodynamics of the Sudetes area in the sedimentary record The no
rthern periphery of the Bohemian Massif, including the Sudetes, is characte
rized by (1) local variation in the timing of marine transgression in respo
nse to dramatic differences in the underlying geological substrate and topo
graphy, (2) a large range of lithologic variation within the Cretaceous sed
iments, and (3) a clear sedimentary record of syndepositional geodynamic ac
tivity. During the Cretaceous, this area was divided into several sub-basin
s with well-defined tectonic frames, often with pull-apart structures drive
n by the regional strike-slip dextral geodynamic regime dominant throughout
its post-Variscan history. The Cretaceous deposits in the Sudetes represen
t an excellent example of the interaction of global, regional, and local pr
ocesses on sedimentation.\n\n\nLed by Jurand Wojewoda, Alina Chrząstek and
Stanisław Leszczyński.\n\n\nPRE-CONFERENCE EXCURSION (3 DAYS)\n\nFrom shall
ow – to deep-marine Cretaceous of the northern Tethys – record of diversifi
cation of the Alpine system in the Polish Carpathians The field trip aims t
o explore the Cretaceous sediments of the Western Carpathians, deposited in
variegated tectonic settings: from pelagic and carbonate platform in the u
ppermost Jurassic/ Lower Cretaceous to synorogenic marls and clastics in th
e Upper Cretaceous. You will see the beautiful landscapes of the southernmo
st tip of Poland with Alpine-type mountains, picturesque klippen and alps.\

CE EXCURSION (2 DAYS)\n\nTuronian-Coniacian of the Opole Cretaceous. This f
ield trip will lead participants to the enormous Folwark quarry in Opole, w
here almost the entire so-called “Opole Cretaceous” is well-exposed. These
strata – largely marls and chalks – are characterized by a rich, diverse pa
leontological and ichnological record: there are numerous representatives o
f ammonites, inoceramid and other bivalves, echinoids, sponges and other in
vertebrate groups, to a lesser extent, vertebrates (fish, sharks, and repti
les). The biostratigraphical scheme relies on calcareous nannoplankton, ino
ceramids, and ammonites.\n\n\nLed by Elena Yazykova, Mariusz Kędzierski, Jo
rdan Todes and Dawid Mazurek\n\n\nPRE-CONFERENCE EXCURSION (1 DAY)\n\nPalae
ontological and geological collections in Warsaw. You will have the opportu
nity to see the rich collections of the Geological Museum of the Polish Geo
logical Survey, and the two museums of the Polish Academy of Sciences: the
Museum of Evolution and the Museum of the Earth, while touring the bustling
center of Warsaw.\n\n\nLed by Izabela Ploch and Tomasz Szczygielski\n\n\nP
RE-CONFERENCE EXCURSION (2 DAYS)\n\nTracing biogeochemical Si-cycle in Late
Cretaceous marine environment. Geological record and petrology of the Uppe
r Cretaceous of the Miechów Trough (southern Poland) We would like to offer
an exciting field trip across the Upper Cretaceous succession of the Miech
ów Synclinorium. The trip starts and finishes in Warsaw and includes an ove
rnight stay in the European Center for Geological Education. https://www.ec
eg.uw.edu.pl/en/ The trip will focus on siliceous-carbonate rocks and the b
iogeochemical Si cycle in marine environments.\n\n\nLed by Agata Jurkowska,
 Ewa Świerczewska-Gładysz and Aleksandra Kasztelewicz\n\n\nPOST-CONFERENCE
EXCURSION (2 DAYS)\n\nThe end of an Era: record of environments, biotic com
munities and events across the Cretaceous-Paleogene boundary in Poland We s
hall be guiding you to the most important localities in central and eastern
Poland that record the environments, biotic communities and events just pr
ior to and across the Cretaceous-Paleogene (K-Pg) boundary. This trip will
include the classic localities near Kazimierz Dolny, in the Middle Vistula
River section, as well as a section near Chełm with the K-Pg iridium anomal
y. We shall also pay a visit to a regional museum at Kazimierz Dolny with a
collection of late Cretaceous fossils.\n\n\nLed by Marcin Machalski, Danut
a Olszewska-Nejbert and Ewa Świerczewska-Gładysz\n\n\nPOST-CONFERENCE EXCUR
SION (2 DAYS)\n\nThe Cretaceous of the North Sudetic Synclinorium (southwes
tern Poland): stratigraphy, origin and economic importance. This trip will
focus on the facies and sedimentary development of the Cenomanian‒Santonian
shallow marine to terrestrial deposits of the North Sudetic Synclinorium (
some 400 km southwest of Warsaw), which record a sedimentary basin (the Nor
th Sudetic Basin) that formed in the mid- Cretaceous at the northern margin
of the Bohemian Massif. The North Sudetic Basin constituted a southeastern
extension of the East Brandenburg Basin and was, at least temporarily, con
nected by a (supposed) strait with the adjacent Intra-Sudetic Basin and – f
urther to the south –the Bohemian Basin: accordingly, it linked the Tethyan
and Boreal realms. Depositional processes, systems, and environments, and
the factors controlling sedimentation in this basin, will be discussed. The
economic importance of the deposits – as building stones, glass sandstones
, and ceramic clays – will also be examined.\n\n\nLed by Stanisław Les
zczyński, Alina Chrząstek, Wojciech Nemec and Jurand Wojewoda\n\n\nPOST-CON
FERENCE EXCURSION (3 DAYS)\n\nCross border, cross boundary: exploring the J
urassic-Cretaceous transition in the western Carpathians. We are exploring
the possibility of offering an exciting field trip across the Western Carpa
thians, starting in Warsaw and ending in Budapest, primarily for those dele
gates who wish to attend both the Cretaceous Symposium and the Jurassic Sym
posium [which will take place the week after the Cretaceous Symposium]. Org
anized jointly with Polish and Slovak colleagues, a special focus will be p
laced on the Jurassic-Cretaceous transition.\n\n\nLed by Jacek Grabows
ki, Damian Lodowski, Kamil Fekete, Josef Michalik, Daniela Rehakova, Istvan
 Fozy, Ottilia Szives\n\n\nPOST-CONFERENCE EXCURSION (2 DAYS)\n\nCretaceous
deep-sea facies, stratigraphy, and ichnology in the Flysch Carpathians and
the Pieniny Klippen Belt. The excursion will lead through selected outcrop
s of Cretaceous deposits in the western and middle part of the Polish Flysc
h Carpathians. Variable facies, problems of stratigraphy and ichnology of t
he most important lithostratigraphic units in the Silesian, Subsilesian and
Magura nappes will be presented.\n\n\nLed by Alfred Uchman and collaborato
rs\n\n\nPOST-CONFERENCE EXCURSION (3 DAYS)\n\nLate Cretaceous inversion of
the Polish Basin – facies distribution and bathymetrical changes The trip w
ill focus on the northeastern part of the Mid-Polish Anticlinorium. In seve
ral outcrops, we will examine the main facies of this region (sandy limesto
ne, gaize, opoka, marls, chalk), their spatial relationship, and resultant
bathymetric and environmental interpretations. The surface data will be lin
ked to high-resolution seismic images linking the subsurface changes to the
depositional architecture during the Late Cretaceous inversion of the Poli
sh Basin.\n\n\nLed by Zbigniew Remin, Piotr Krzywiec, and Aleksandra Stacho
wska\n\n\nVENUE THE UNIVERSITY OF WARSAW\n\nNew Library The new University
of Warsaw Library is a building of surprising diversity, fusing the functio
nality of a modern library with the atmosphere of an old town. Abutting the
Vistula embankment, it encapsulates European culture while retaining adist
inct Mazovian heritage. The interior of the building is stunning, centered
around a three-story monumental ‘Passage’ leading to the library itself, an
d open spaces connecting reading halls, resting places, and the books thems
elves. Our lecture halls directly face rows of bookshelves containing massi
ve collections of books and magazines from around the world. There are also
numerous shops, cafes, and art galleries on the library premises. The roof
of the library hosts one of the largest, most beautiful rooftop gardens in
Europe, and is an attractive resting place for students and tourists alike
. From the roof, visitors can admire both the Varsovian skyline and the Vis
tula River. The garden is immersed in a profusion of vibrant plants: yellow
, pink, red and orange flowering shrubs, silver-leaved willows, white bloom
ing Dasiphora fruticosa, and dwarf pines, among many others. The walkways,
paths, bridges, and pergolas traversing the garden are hidden within an ass
ortment of vines and climbing hydrangea, providing a scene of solitude and
nature within the bustling University of Warsaw campus. The majority of the
symposium will be hosted here, in the new library. THE UNIVERSITY OF WARSA
W Old Library This is an iconic building of the University of Warsaw: initi
ally built in 1894, at the beginning of the 21st century it was fully renov
ated into a modern lecture and conference centre. [During World War II, Cze
sław Miłosz, the 1980 Nobel laureate in Literature, worked here as a janito
r.] We will meet here for the Opening Ceremony.\n\n\nECEG European Geologic
al Education Center in Chęciny ECEG is the University of Warsaw’s geologic
field center, built within an abandoned Devonian dolomite quarry in the med
ieval town of Chęciny, in the heart of the Gòry Świętokrzyskie (the Holy Cr
oss Mountains). With state-of-the-art geological laboratories, lecture room
s, hotel accommodations, and all of the other facilities that may be useful
for comfortable field work, it is a perfect place to carry out student fie
ld camps and geologic research. ECEG will serve as the base for some of our
field trips, and host many of the pre- and post-conference workshops.\n\n\
