The Ministry's supervisory services analysed e.g.:

  • the Institute's finances, the implementation of the tasks of the Polish Geological Survey and the National Administrator of Underground Carbon Dioxide Storage Sites (KAPS CO2),
  • resolutions of the Scientific Council of the PGI-NRI,
  • results of audits performed by ministerial and external inspection bodies,
  • opinions of external companies (partners) about cooperation with PGI-NRI.

Earlier, by Resolution No. 10/IV/2023 of 24 April 2023, the report on the activities of the PGI-NRI for the year 2022 was positively assessed by the Scientific Council of the Polish Geological Institute – National Research Institute.

In 2022, PGI-NRI had 384 projects underway, 236 of which have been completed.

The PGI-NRI Development Strategy until 2026 with an outlook up to 2030, adopted in 2022, identifies three main, interpenetrating fields of activity as the pillars of the Institute's development: Energy, Raw Materials and Environment. In the course of implementation of projects aimed at safeguarding energy security of the country comprehensive geological studies were conducted, mainly concerning prospecting of the country's geological structure, search for and support of development of new and renewable sources of energy, delineation of zones of high geothermal potential and development of methodology of determination of thermal conductivity of rocks and soils.

As regards raw materials, the main directions of activities included recognition of geological structure of the country and assessment of potential of mineral resources, registration and protection of mineral deposits in Poland and prospecting and balancing of groundwaters. The environmental part comprised studies on identification and monitoring of geological hazards, observations and measurements documenting the extent and rate of erosion of the sea coast, monitoring of groundwater quality, recognition of geological-engineering conditions in the whole area of the country (both onshore and offshore) and assessment of chemical state of soils, grounds and groundwaters.

In 2022, PGI-NRI cooperated with nearly 200 national entities. Cooperation with the Ministry of Climate and Environment, the Ministry of Infrastructure and the Ministry of Science and Higher Education played a key role. There was also cooperation with universities, scientific institutes and companies active in geology.

The priority platform and forum for the Institute's international cooperation in 2022, as in previous years, was the EuroGeoSurveys (EGS) and its expert groups, in most of which the Institute has representatives. PIG-NRI cooperated with both geological services, scientific and research institutions, universities and international research organisations.

In the past year, PGI-NRI staff published 562 articles in scientific journals, including 95 articles in journals from the Ministry of Science and Higher Education list, indexed in the Journal Citation Reports database.
