PGI-NRI Hydrogeochemical Laboratory

Scope of activity of Hydrogeochemical Laboratory:

Isotope testing of water and gases, in particular:

  1. Carrying out isotopic analysis of oxygen, hydrogen and other elements for psh and psg tasks;
  2. Methodical works with the aim of perfecting and extending the analytical capabilities of the Laboratory;
  3. Publishing results of isotopic tests;
  4. Promotional and training activities.

Measurement procedure

FOT. A. Wilamowski

  • Approx. 1 microliter of water is injected through the septum to the heating block, connected to the measuring cavity of the analyser
  • A vacuum is kept in the system
  • A sample is immediately evaporated, and the steam is drawn into the measuring cavity
  • The share of three isotopologues of water is measured: H
  • 216O, HD16O, H218O
  • Measured values are converted into atomic relations: 18O/16O and D/H

What types of water are not tested?

  • Waters with increased mineralization (unfavourable effect on the equipment).
  • Water polluted with organic substances (absorption bands may coincide with water absorption bands).
