Project Objectives, Tasks and Results

OBJECTIVES AND TASKS

Assessment of the possibility of using geological structures for the development of closed Hot Dry Rocks (HDR) geothermal systems in Poland, supported by cartographic imaging of selected promising structures.

The primary task of the project was to identify areas and geological structures with the most favourable conditions for the location of closed geothermal systems. An indirect objective of the project was to enrich the database of petrophysical parameters of rocks, including thermal parameters, and to perform geophysical surveys that would enable the refinement of spatial models of rock complexes. The precision and reliability of this work are crucial for the correct assessment of the modelled structures.
The data obtained as a result of the project constitute important information, useful for the planning and implementation of future deep geological mapping programmes. The results of the research will be used by the Ministry of the Environment, government and local government units, potential entrepreneurs interested in using rock heat, and scientific institutions conducting research in the field of Earth sciences (including university departments and the Institute of Geological Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences).

The project contributes to environmental protection by supporting the development of renewable energy sources, in this case geothermal energy, which is one of the main areas identified in the Kyoto Protocol, which commits to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and in the European Union's policy in this field. This project is the implementation of one of the basic strategic objectives and directions of action in the field of programming, commissioning and financing hydrogeological works from the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management, which were set out in the document ‘Directions of research in the field of raw material geology (for 2009-2015)’, developed in 2009 by the Ministry of the Environment.
