About Project
TITLE OF THE PROJECT
Supporting sustainable development and the use of shallow geothermal energy in areas covered by the ‘mieszkanie plus’ programme in Poland
TIMEFRAME FOR THE CURRENT PHASE
20.04.2017-30.10.2017
CONTRACTING AUTHORITY/FUNDING AGENCY
The project was funded under Operational Programme PL04 ‘Saving energy and promoting renewable energy source’ of the European Economic Area Financial Mechanism 2009-2014, as part of the Bilateral Cooperation Fund.
Geothermal4PL was a pre-defined project by the Ministry of the Environment, which, together with the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management, acted as the Programme Operator.
WYKONAWCA
- Polish Geological Institute - NRI (lead partner),
- Christian Michelsen Research - CMR (Norwegian partner),
- Norsk Geologisk Undersøkelse - NGU (Norwegian Geological Survey),
- Norges teknisk-naturvitenskapelige universitet - NTNU (Norwegian University of Science and Technology).
RECIPIENTS
The project was aimed at regional and local geological authorities, planners, companies that design and install ground-source heat pumps, and users of such systems.
Objectives
The Geothermal4PL project aimed to support the sustainable development and use of shallow geothermal energy in Poland, particularly in areas covered by the Mieszkanie Plus programme, through the exchange of experiences and the acquisition of new knowledge by experts from PGI-NRI and the project’s end-users, thanks to cooperation with partner CMR AS and experts from the Norwegian Geological Survey and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology.
One of the aims of the Polish-Norwegian project was to raise awareness amongst potential investors in areas covered by the ‘Mieszkanie Plus’ programme of the potential for using shallow geothermal energy to heat and cool buildings through the use of ground-source heat pumps.
RESULTS
As part of the project, maps and reports were drawn up on the geothermal potential of the bedrock in boreholes at selected depths for six investment areas chosen from the ‘Mieszkanie Plus’ programme: Biała Podlaska, Gdynia, Poznań, Warsaw (Pruszków), Wrocław and Zamość. A feasibility study on the use of shallow geothermal energy was also prepared, along with guidelines for converting geological parameters into geothermal parameters.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE PROJECT
The ‘Mieszkanie Plus’ programme envisioned the construction of energy-efficient homes built using innovative and environmentally friendly technologies and high-quality materials. One of the cleanest and most readily available forms of energy is shallow geothermal energy.
The project was undertaken for the following reasons:
- the need to demonstrate the potential for using shallow geothermal energy, using ground-source heat pumps to heat and cool buildings in areas covered by the Mieszkanie Plus programme,
- the need to reduce emissions of gases and particulates resulting from the combustion of conventional fuels
- global, EU and national energy policies aimed at increasing the use of renewable energy and the adoption of zero- and near-zero-emission technologies,
- the need to raise building insulation standards.
