About project
TITLE OF THE PROJECT
Optimising low-temperature geothermal energy resources for the green transition (OptiSGE)
TIMEFRAME FOR THE CURRENT PHASE
01.09.2023 – 31.08.2024
CONTRACTING AUTHORITY/FUNDING AGENCY
Main client: Ministry of Development Funds and Regional Policy.
The project was funded under the Bilateral Cooperation Fund of the European Economic Area Financial Mechanism 2014-2021 and the Norwegian Financial Mechanism 2014-2021.
CONTRACTOR
Project leader: the Polish Geological Institute - NRI, led by the Lower Silesia Branch.
Project partner: the Norwegian Research Centre NORCE
RECIPIENTS
The project was aimed at regional and local geological authorities, planners, companies that design and install ground-source heat pumps, and users of such systems.
Objectives
The aim of the OptiSGE project was to strengthen the green transition by implementing innovative methods for assessing and using low-temperature geothermal energy resources to support the economy and societies in Poland and Norway.
Results
The research involved collecting reference data using the Distributed Temperature Sensing (DTS) technique in geological boreholes, utilising an interrogator and a fibre-optic temperature sensor.
The results of the research provided the data necessary to determine the optimal use of low-temperature geothermal resources.
This resulted in a point layer showing the locations of 23 boreholes from the CBDH database in which temperature profiling was carried out.
The borehole records contain information on the borehole number and name from the CBDG database, x and y coordinates in the WGS84 system, depth and elevation. They also include a temperature profile along with the date the measurement was taken.
Despite the differing conditions in Norway and Poland, the OptiSGE results provided common solutions for identifying the optimal SGE system design based on local energy needs and natural resources, to the benefit of the populations in both countries.
Data Access
The data can be downloaded using thei GeoLOG app, which is available free of charge for mobile devices from Google Play and App Store as well as through Portal CBDG - Geologia, under the tab GEOTHERMAL.
Information about the project can also be found on the website of the Norwegian Research Centre NORCE.
The information collected is for guidance only and does not replace a detailed, local analysis carried out for the investment in question (location) at the stage of drawing up the Geological Works Design or other expert reports. PGI-NRI accepts no liability for any losses or lost profits arising from the use of the information provided.
