On 3-6 June 2025, employees of PGI-NRI from the Division of Marine Geology in Gdańsk took part in a meeting of EMODnet Geology project participants, which was held in Reykjavik, Iceland. The meeting was hosted by the Iceland GeoSurvey (ÍSOR/Íslenskar orkurannsóknir) and held at the University of Iceland.
EMODnet (The European Marine Observation and Data Network) is a project funded by the European Commission through the Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA). Its aim is to collect metadata and data products relating to the marine environment and make them available through an online browser (EMODnet Map Viewer).
EMODnet consists of eight components: Bathymetry, Biology, Chemistry, Human Activities, Physics, Geology, Habitats and Data Ingestion, whose task is to collect oceanographic information from outside the consortium. PGI-NRI is one of the consortium members in the part concerning marine geology (EMODnet – Geology).
The meeting focused on harmonising marine geological data, marine clastic resources, coastal zone research, geohazards and underwater/submerged landscapes. Particular emphasis was placed on defining work plans for the next phase of the project – EMODnet Phase V. The current phase ends in September 2025.
As part of the next phase, PGI-NRI has committed to participating in the preparation of a case study for the 'WP5. Coastal Behaviour' working group. An example of this is the project ‘4D cartography in the southern Baltic coastal zone’, implemented as part of the tasks of the Polish Geological Service and financed by the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management.
