The Director of the Polish Geological Institute – National Research Institute (PGI-NRI), Prof. Krzysztof Szamałek and the Deputy Director for Research and Research Support at the State Geological Service, Prof. Stanisław Mikulski took part in a meeting with a delegation from the Parliamentary Group of the State Great Khural of Mongolia and representatives of Mongolian industry.
The event was also attended by Oyundari Navaan-Yunden, Mongolia’s Ambassador to Poland. The meeting took place at the Ministry of Climate and Environment and was hosted by Poland’s Chief Geologist, Prof. Krzysztof Galos.
Mongolia is an important economic partner for Poland in Central Asia, and relations between the two countries go back many years. Cooperation between Polish geologists and their Mongolian counterparts dates back to the 19th century, and its intensive development has continued uninterrupted since the 1960s. One of its outcomes was the signing, in November 2021, of an agreement between the PGI-NRI and the Geological Survey of Mongolia on cooperation in the field of geological sciences.

During the meeting, Prof. Krzysztof Szamałek outlined the scope of activities of the PGI-NRI, noting that the Institute’s key area of activity is the performance of the duties of the national geological service as set out in the Geological and Mining Law and the Water Law. He paid particular attention to issues relating to mineral resources, particularly those that are critical to the Polish economy.
Prof. Stanisław Mikulski reviewed the cooperation to date between the PGI-NRI and the State Geological Service of Mongolia in the field of geology, and outlined the prospects for further involvement of Polish geologists in scientific and research projects in Mongolia.
