The PGI-NRI has maintained a high level of scientific activity for many years, as evidenced, among other things, by the Institute’s staff’s publications in 2025. In total, they have published 220 academic papers, including articles in prestigious international journals as well as publications in national and industry journals.
This year’s output comprises 122 articles published in prestigious academic journals indexed in the Journal Citation Reports (JCR) database, as well as 98 publications in other academic and trade journals.
The highest-ranked publication to which a member of the Institute contributed was the article titled ‘Earliest amniote tracks recalibrate the timeline of tetrapod evolution’, co-authored by Grzegorz Niedźwiedzki, published in Nature, for which 200 points were awarded. The article was published in a journal with an Impact Factor of 48.5.
Highly rated articles by PGI-NRI staff have also appeared in journals such as Earth-Science Reviews, Gondwana Research, Science of The Total Environment and Geology. The largest number of articles by the Institute’s staff have been published in the Geological Quarterly, which remains one of the main scientific journals used to present the results of research conducted at the PGI-NRI. A significant number of articles have also been published in journals such as Minerals, Mineralogical Magazine, Catena and Przegląd Geologiczny.
The publications covered a wide range of research topics, including regional geology, palaeontology, geochemistry, hydrogeology, mineral resources geology, environmental studies and geological hazards, which demonstrates the interdisciplinary nature of the Institute’s research activities.
In 2025, the Institute’s staff also published the results of research employing modern analytical and digital methods, including 3D modelling, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and advanced remote sensing and geoinformation techniques. The development of these skills is in line with global trends in the digital transformation of the geological sciences.
The list of publications for 2025 shows that the PGI-NRI remains one of Poland’s leading research centres in the field of Earth sciences, and that its staff successfully publish their research findings in both recognised national journals and the most prestigious international periodicals. Compared to other European geological services affiliated with the EGS, the PGI-NRI ranks among the top three in terms of the number of articles published in journals with an impact factor.
