Minister Szyszko: geothermal energy is our great opportunity and our future

Professor Jan Szyszko, Minister of the Environment, announced at a press conference that geothermal energy resources are several tens higher than our energy requirements.

- Geothermal energy is our great opportunity and our future. This is one of the least expensive sources of energy that may be a way to get rid of the smog – said Minister Szyszko and added – Polish geothermal energy will enable us to meet the requirements of the EU climate policy. In this way we may get emission-free energy that is friendly to the environment and to the people.

Professor Mariusz Orion Jędrysek, Chief Geologist of Poland and Deputy Minister is a supporter of geothermal energy, too: - A wider use of renewable sources, including geothermal energy, is of a key importance to the continued growth of Poland’s economy and helps to  comply with the EU requirements, also those regarding gas emissions to the atmosphere.

Professor Mariusz Orion Jędrysek noted that the support to geothermal energy in Poland is a priority to the Government – The development of geothermal energy and geothermics is now a key objective of the Ministry of the Environment. Chief Geologist of Poland has emphasized that “geothermal energy will be included in the “National Resource Policy”, as prepared by the Ministry of the Environment”.

The Ministry of the Environment announced at the conference that it has received 14 applications for geothermal project licenses. The applications are now reviewed by Hydrogeological Documentation commission experts for technical merits. Chief Geologist of Poland evaluates project eligibility to grants, including those intended for drilling test wells to tap geothermal water under the National Environmental Fund and Water Management Fund’s Priority Programme titled: “Geology and Mining, Part 1) Investigation of Poland’s geological structure and management of mineral resources and of groundwater with a focus on the needs of Polish geology”. Moreover, the National Environmental Fund and Water Management Fund offers support to geothermal projects under the Programme “Air Quality Improvement. Part 1) Use of geothermal resources in power generation”. Project budget is equal to PLN 500 million.
