How copper and silver deposits were discovered in Poland

Polish copper deposits were first mined in the Holy Cross, Tatra and Carpathian Mountains. However, other deposits made Poland one of the largest copper mining centres worldwide. In this context, the Sudetic and Fore-Sudetic areas with copper ores occurring in Upper Permian (Zechstein) formations, deserve special attention.

The copper industry started to develop there in the late 19th century to meet the demand for metals from the fast growing German industry. Polish mining and metallurgical industries began to flourish following the shift of Poland’s borders to the west.

After several year-long investigations of the Fore-Sudetic Monocline, a team of geologists from the Polish Geological Institute, led by Jan Wyżykowski, discovered and proved a deposit of copper and silver located between Lubin and Głogów. This is the largest deposit in Europe and one of the largest in the world.
